What are the most common causes of car accidents in Indianapolis?

On Behalf of Parr Richey Frandsen Patterson Kruse LLP | Mar 21, 2025 | Car Accidents |

Several factors consistently contribute to vehicular accidents in the Indianapolis area. Data shows the following are top causes of accidents in the area:

  • Alcohol: Recent research conducted by Indiana University’s Public Policy institute finds that a top cause of motor vehicle collisions in Marion County is alcohol impairment.
  • Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit remains the top cause of accidents. High speed reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
  • Distracted driving: Activities that divert attention from driving, including texting, using navigation systems, and eating, lead to significant numbers of road incidents.

Each factor above not only increases the likelihood of an accident but also the potential legal ramifications that follow. Speeding, for instance, may lead to harsher penalties under Indianapolis laws due to the reckless disregard for safety. Distracted driving, similarly, has been the focus of recent legislation aiming to reduce its prevalence. As noted above, another area of concern involves driving under the influence (DUI). Alcohol impairs cognitive and motor functions, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Legal consequences for DUI are severe and can include hefty fines and imprisonment.

A broad review of common causes of car accidents in Indianapolis highlights areas needing attention from drivers. Part of the reason the most common causes of accidents are so frustrating is the fact that they are avoidable. Drivers who cause accidents due to speeding, distracted driving, and intoxication not only cause property damage and face a potential ticket — they can cause serious injury to passengers and those in other vehicles.

Victims of these accidents have options. Legal remedies are often available and can include financial awards to cover the cost of medical treatment, missed work, and rehabilitation. It is important to review the details of the accident to determine if legal remedies are appropriate.
